a disco astronaut. we've all carried out the same theme. >> reporter: city leaders scaled back the street party in recent years after a violent clash. police are on foot pushing people along. still fans say this remains a great celebration. >> i've always been a fan. i'm catholic, so this is a scare away the spirits. tomorrow it's the saintly day. >> reporter: earlier we saw police reprimand for public drunkenness. happy halloween, amber lee, ktvu news. more details now in 2004 and 2005 a total of five people were stabbed at the castro

halloween party. in 2006 nine people were shot and wounded. after that the city stopped sanctioning large events and tried to encourage people to celebrate at home. but over the years, halloween has still drawn a lot of people to the castro. in 10 minutes, keeping people safe. authorities move sex offenders off the streets. new at 10:00, a major development in the case of a san francisco city gardener accused of running over and killing a woman at a city park. we've now learned he has been fired. police say he ran over the woman in his pickup after he lay sunbathing at the park. christine savanamier died of her injuries. we're told bernoski was fired yesterday. he had previously been suspended without pay. bernoski has entered not guilty

pleas to both felony charges. his attorney has said he was unaware he struck the woman. new details today on the united express flight headed from san francisco to san san antonio that was diverted. the tsa says a crew member found a threatening note in the bathroom. passengers were taken off the plane and rescreened. there was also a sweep of the aircraft but nothing was found. and tonight at 10:15. new rules for phone, tablets and lab tops while you fly. we've been checking in with airline about where you're going to see those changes. a norovirus has sickened several students and all had

the same thing. >> reporter: university officials are telling us that all of the students had the same symptoms. tonight we talked to two of the students that got sick. >> reporter: these two stanford freshman told us they started feeling the discomfort. >> my stomach felt kind of  queasy. i kind of went to the lounge and sitting there. they were going to the bathroom and just got really sick. >> i remember i ate lunch that day and i felt perfectly fine. after class that afternoon, i came back here and was sick the last eight hours. >> reporter: they said it was similar to food poisoning and there were several others that were also sick. >> we had six people go to the hospital. >> reporter: all showed vomiting and diarrhea. because of the quick onset and the fact that it was contained today the single dorm. officials believe it was the

highly contagious noro virus. >> we do see a fair amount of cases especially in areas like day cares and areas like dormitories where people live in very close quarters. >> reporter: hampton officials say that -- >> from what i understand it's once in a blue moon situation. >> reporter: norovirus can still be spread for a 72 hour window. no food or food sources were the cause of the virus. but they're interviewing all the students with what they ate and if they all had contact with one common person.

jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. new video from san jose where a stabbing has left a woman with critical injuries. it happened around 4:30 this afternoon on the 6300 block of almendinger road. neighbors reported a disturbance with a man and a woman that ended with a woman being stabbed. the woman is expected to survive. in oakland police are trying to find people who shot at each other from their car this is afternoon near lake merit. it happened around 5:30 where oak street turns into lake side drive near the county courthouse. one witness told us he heard five shots fired between a van and suv. there's no word of anyone being wounded. that witness also told us that he was most disturbed because he says no one ducked or even seemed to notice that people were shooting at each other. the state public utilities

commission approved new -- commissioners passed new rules aimed at protecting the men and women who work on the tracks. the changes include more training, locking switches to keep trains from moving on tracks where work is being done. many of the regulations have been under consideration now for the past four years but the commissioner said they would not have prevented the october 19th accident that killed two workers out inspecting the tracks in contra costa county. >> look forward to, a situation where our rules prevent accidents rather than respond to accidents. some emergency rules were added because of the b.a.r.t. accident. a watch person is now mandated and there must be three way communication between track side workers, central command and train operators. the rules were said to be the first in the nation. bicycle advocates will

allow bikes on trains at all hours of the day. for years, b.a.r.t. has been running a policy for bikes. bikes are still prohibited from the first train at all hours or cars that are already full and the first three trains during peak commute hours. hundreds of b.a.r.t. workers vote tomorrow on a at the present timetive contract agreement. b.a.r.t.'s largest union aciu says it expects to release the information by 10:00 a.m. the numbers are at a 12 year high, last year more than 900 people were hit by cars. that's an average of almost three people hit by a car every day. 16 of them died. so far this year, safety organization says 12 pedestrians have been killed. the city says it's goal is to

reduce severe and fatal pedestrian injuries by 50% in 2021. safety advocates though say progress is slow in coming. >> we need to pick it up. we need to invest money. we need to priority money so this plan doesn't just sit on the shelf and collect dust while people are getting hit on the street. san francisco supervisor scott weiner offered legislation aimed at streamlining the project. he blames bureaucracy and poor communication for the backlog. on interstate 280 on the peninsula. it's not pedestrians being hit it's cars running into animals. ktvu's cara liu brought us a report that shows where it happens the most. only on 2, what's being recommended. >> a lot of times especially at

night, a lot of deer dart across the street and hit you. >> reporter: ktvu obtained a soon to be released study funded by caltrans it analyzed crashes and used collars on deer to learn where or how wild animals move over and across 280. >> every time there's a collision between a deer there's risk to animal or injury. and that comes with a cost. >> reporter: edgewood road and near wood side, each crash costs the community an average of $5,700, and much more when there's a serious injury or lawsuit. >> sometimes the deer will pop up over the hood and go through the windshield of a vehicle and obviously injure the people inside. >> reporter: he recommends 8- foot tall fencing to encourage animals to cross safely under the freeway. the cost between one and $4

million. is that worth it? >> well if you talk to the people who get injured or die, their family members of people who die in the interstate it's definitely worth it. if we take a dollar value, it's cost effective in five years. it will pay for itself and reduce collisions in five years. >> reporter: caltrans says it will not decide whether to spend money on this until seeing the report which is slated to be released in a week. taking the fight to convicted felons. >> sir didn't you know it was illegal for you to have this gun. >> we go door to door with officers to get deadly firearms off the street. >> how much temperatures can climb where you live. >> and in 90 second, tracking them town at home is easy but not every sex offender has an address. >> i refuse to go down to the police department and register as a sex offender.

developing news out of clover dale where a pickup hit two boys that were out trick or treating. the 12 and 13-year-old boys were in a crosswalk at about 7:00 p.m. one boy was taken by helicopter to children's hospital in oakland with a broken leg. the other was taken to hillsburg memorial suffering of head trauma. this happened on south clover dale boulevard. the 75-year-old driver is cooperating and alcohol and

speed do not appear to be factors. keeping kids safe this halloween is the goal of parol agents who were out checking on sex offenders tonight. it's almost become a halloween tradition. but there's another tactic agents are using that might be even more critical to protecting the little ones. new at 10:00, ktvu's eric rasmussen is live now in oakland where dozens of registered sex offenders spent this halloween together in one place. >> from 5:00 p.m. until just a few minutes ago sex offender who don't have an address spent the night in a room. they were required to stay here. at the height of the trick or treating rush more than 50 men lined up here all parolees. sex offenders with crimes against children spent this halloween night off the street in one room in oakland. >> i've been on this since

april 2009. >> reporter: willford lewis did time for aggravated assault with a weapon. but it was a lascivious act with a minor with a 13-year-old when he was 14 that has him here. other sex offenders who do have a home get a visit from parol agents to make sure they're not a magnet for trick or treaters. >> lights out, dark, go in the house. we don't want to see any halloween decorations, no candy. >> you know on the corner of san pablo. >> reporter: it's all part of operation boo. using gps to track all parol offenders. those at this transient center got a meal and counseling. they say their priority is to keep them off the streets.

>> it makes it safer for the community. >> reporter: there are about 85 transient sex offenders on parol. many of them can't stay with friends or family because of jessica's law which prohibits them with living or staying any where within 2,000 feet of parks or schools. we're live in oakland, eric rasmussen. police in antioch are searching for the owner of two unleashed dogs. the first was a man walking his own dog. he was attacked by two stray pit bulls. some good samaritans stepped in to help and two of them were bitten by the dogs as well. when police arrived they say the dogs attacked an officer forcing them to open fire. one of the dogs was killed the other was taken to antioch. a puppy was found near by underneath a car. it's possible the two dogs were just being protective. the owner of the dogs has not

been located. it was a hard day for three teenagers that were saying goodbye to their parents. one week ago the couple was walking their dog when a car hit them from behind and killed them. marjerie reitrell is being charged. her arraignment has been postponed each day this week. prosecutors filed a misdemeanor count against efren carillo today. he's accused of loitering, prowling and peeking into windows. carillo has issued a special apology and saying he is being treated for a bing drinking problem. his arraignment is schedule for

tomorrow. the obama association is tapping into silican talent to fix the problems with health care.com. the center for medicare and medicaid services says the high tech manpower will help solve issues to handle large scale operations. the government is promising that the site will be running properly by the end of next month. our connective world is getting even more connected. now the faa is allowing passengers to use electronic devices. travelers had a universal reaction tonight. it's about time. deborah. >> reporter: it's a rule that frustrating passengers and some shrug at it. several passengers left their cell phone on when it was supposed to be off. but soon it won't matter anymore. >> when you can get diamonds

inappropriately. a school official noticed the incident. they say rans passed a background check and is now out on bond. bubba paris has pled guilty to -- paris who has been a host on ktvu's point after sports show is scheduled to be sentenced on february 31st. authorities positively identified a body as that of a missing gold miner from san jose. the body was discovered yesterday in a densely wooded area along the south yuba river. 65-year-old walter stever was reported missing on monday after he failed to return home from a mining expedition. the cause of his death isn't known yet. autopsy results are pending. however authorities do say there are no signs of foul

play. we told you about a state audit that shows california courts often fail to report the names of the mentally ill. undermining efforts to take guns away from potentially dangerous owners. police are out trying to find the 20,000 people in california who have guns and shouldn't. it's tonight's special report. potentially lethal weapons taken out of circulation. >> the barretta 2ss. >> we'll do a probation search first. >> reporter: five hours later. seven special agents from the california bureau of firearms -- >> misdemeanor charge for stalking. he has four guns listed.

>> reporter: the caravan of unmarked vehicles heads out to confiscate guns in the quiet suburban community of livermore. this neighborhood with nicely manicured lawns is the first stop. >> searching looking for any type of contraband. >> reporter: the team has seven more stops to go. >> the individual has told agents that he surrendered the firearms to a local gun dealer. >> reporter: agents will now have to follow up to see if the story is true. there are more than 21,000 californians in possession of more than 40,000 handguns and assault weapons. the system known as a.p.s. generates the list by checking courts records. california is the only state with such a data base.

more states are asking for the legal gun seizures can improve public safety. alexis was tormented by mental health issues. they found the gunman behind at least half of killings had a history of mental illness. state numbers we obtained show 30% of individuals who have guns illegally and who are on the a.b.s. list have been mentally ill. >> we're out here to disarm the individuals that are in possession of them. >> you want to get the guns. >> i want to get the guns too. >> reporter: but this is tedious and expensive work. addresses turn out to be outdated or the persons are not home. agents though continue to knock on doors. stopping next on pleasanton not far from the quaint homes and

friend tuesday afternoon. police say 29-year-old julio cesar rewhere -- reyes then left his 9-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son in the suv parked on the street. >> it was bothering me and i said maybe there's a kid in there. you know, they were there. or he's there. so that's when i call 911. >> reporter: sergeant raj maharaj responded to the call and said they found the young children decheveled and hungry. when perez called police trying to find his children and vehicle, he was arrested. >> it was about 46-degree out that evening. they didn't have any blankets. they didn't have a way to heat themselves in the car. it was a dark area.

yes in my opinion they were in dangerous. >> what did you find out when the kids were left overnight. >> i said my god, i'm glad i called. >> you probably really helped them. >> yeah, maybe i did. >> reporter: police are still investigating why re reyes never came back. reyes remains in jail tonight and declined our request for an interview. federal agents have uncovered another drug tunnel discovered between mexico and san diego but they say this one is different. they call it one of the most sophisticated ever and say it probably took about a year to build. and for the first time agents seized cocaine. about 325 pounds of it. usually they say smugglers only move marijuana through the tunnels. more than 8-tons of marijuana was also seized. authorities say it is a major blow to drug traffickers.

the best or nothing. only on 2, a danville home in such disrepair it's been called a house of horrors. now red tagged by the city. that home was swarming with hundreds of rats and so full of garbage the homeowner had to sleep outside in a chicken coop. john fowler tells us why it took years to bring that squaller toen an end. >> reporter: this home sits in a high scale neighbor. neighbors say the last four years with the homeowner here were a horror. >> the smell of urine was coming up from her house over to my house. four to six feet of trash throughout her entire house. i assume she was crawling through the trash to get to her

room. >> reporter: the 65-year-old homeowner would sleep in the chicken coop. then the rats some 1,500 rats around the house and 300-pound of dog food to feet them. >> you move to danville you don't expect to live next to a lady who is basically going to feed rats. >> reporter: they first started working with the homeowners association to no avail. then they contacted vector control and the city of danville. >> some of our officers from the police department went to the location. >> reporter: gillette said the smell triggered a well being check. the woman removed the house red tagged. officials ordered the property cleaned up. >> it took about a month to clear everything out. it's surprising. >> reporter: the homeowner has not been back but is responsible for about $100,000 in costs. a lien may force the sale of her home. in danville, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news.

the san jose mercury news campus has been sold. the newspaper's company made the announcement today. tech company supermicrocomputer has bought the 36-acre campus for an undisclosed price. the price will continue to occupy the building for now but plans to relocate in 2014. the 49ers won't be playing the first ever game next year at their new stadium in santa clara. instead it looks like the earthquakes will have that mono -- that honor. the 49ers say the major league soccer game will give the stadium crew the chance for a dry run before the nfl season begins. and joe montana is pushing for a new hotel and restaurant near levi's stadium. they wanted to open the complex in time for next season. the city of santa clara looked

at plans to open by october 16, 2015. macy's is predicting the weakest sales. bank analysts are expecting same store sales to go up just 1.47% which would be down 50% compared to last year. one reason for this, the -p shopping season this year will be six days shorter than last year. nice day today. we had 70s. 72 in antioch and 74 in

back on shore as temperatures trend down. overnight in santa rosa or when you wake up tomorrow morning 46 46-degree. that's chilly for urban center. 74degrees for a daytime high. 75 in vacaville. these are the forecast highs for friday. we have fire danger that's there but not as bad as it could be this time of year. the santa clara county lots of mid-70s. this weekend flew by. 67 in daily city and 70 in san bruno. forecast highs for tomorrow a little warmer than they were today. your five day forecast there it is. and we're going to change the clocks back which is always an indication that seasons are changing. we're going to drop it off an hour and that changes things because on monday and tuesday it's kind of dark when you come home from work and just a little bit different.
